13/03/18 The Safety at Sea through War and Upheaval: Irish Lights 1911-1923

Irish Lights

A new exhibition is on display in Donegal County Museum which explores the history of Irish Lights between 1911 and 1923. It tells the story of how Irish Lights continued its mission to ensure safety at sea for all, through the daunting events of the First World War, the Easter Rising, the Anglo-Irish War of 1919–1921 and the Anglo-Irish Treaty.

What emerges is a never before told story of devotion to duty, scientific, engineering and physical endeavour, war, revolution and change. It is also the deeply personal story of those who worked with and built up Irish Lights and who devoted their lives to protecting the coastline for the safety of all.

The exhibition is based on never before seen material from the Irish Light archives, exploring the history of the island of Ireland itself, its ever-changing coasts and shorelines, and the history of the people who lived along our seaboard.

Irish Lights is a modern maritime organisation delivering an essential safety service around the coast of Ireland, protecting the marine environment, and supporting the marine industry and coastal communities. This travelling exhibition was developed by Irish Lights in partnership with the Royal Irish Academy.

The exhibition is on display until the end of April in Donegal County Museum, High Road, Letterkenny, Co Donegal. Admission free and all are welcome. Museum Opening Times: Monday to Friday 10am – 4.30pm Lunch 12.30 - 1pm Saturdays 1- 4.30pm. T 074 9124613
